Instructions for Mac-Users

On newer Mac-Books with M1/M2/M3 processors, VirtualBox does not work any more. Instead, you can use UTM. Thus, if and only if you are running a (newer) Mac-Book, please follow the instructions below instead of PDF pages 5-11:

  1. Go to https://mac.getutm.app/ and download UTM using the Download-Button. You do not have to buy the software from the store, downloading it directly from the website is free of charge.
  2. Download the (already-installed) virtual machine from https://ucloud.univie.ac.at/index.php/s/NkkKcsvE9RGOUq5
(Alternatively, you can also use a newer version from https://mac.getutm.app/gallery/, but to download them you have to register first.)
  3. Install UTM.
  4. Extract the ZIP archieve, so you get the prg.utm.
  5. Open UTM. Click on "Open", then choose the prg.utm file.
  6. Then you can just use the Play-Button to start the virtual machine.
    Username: prg-user
    Password: prg-user

The next time, just start UTM and start the VM using the play button.

This virtual machine contains an older version of Debian, but it is sufficient for our linux course.
